April 30, 1972:

THE FACES wrapped up their American tour with a hot show at Tampa Stadium in Florida. Here's a pretty good audience recording, although there are a few glitches. Its a single "wma" file, 16MB, about 55 minutes, with these tracks:

"Mick Jagger Tells Torrid Tattoo Tales"

Another fun issue of CREEM, and another fun JAGGER interview. In this, the January 1982 issue, Mick is interviewed by RAY BONICI. Ray asks a bit about "Tatoo You", and we learn that PETE TOWNSHEND did some vocals on "Slave" and that "Heaven" is not about JOHN LENNON.



Mick talks about filming "Fitzcarraldo", and how he's trying to produce a film of GORE VIDAL's book "Kalki". Now where have I heard that before? Oh, right, here, and also here.





In ROBERT CHRISTGAU's "Christgau Consumer Guide", "Tatoo You" gets an "A-", and MAX ROMEO's "Holding Out My Love To You" (co-produced by KEITH RICHARDS, click here for more) gets a "B-".

An Interview With Mick Jagger

To promote "Sticky Fingers" and the launch of the ROLLING STONES RECORDS label, an interview LP was released to radio stations. Called "An Interview With Mick Jagger By Tom Donahue April, 1971", it features about 40 minutes of Tom Donahue interviewing Mick. The sound quality is a little shaky at first, but it improves partway through Side One, and then its fine from there on out. The interview also includes visits from CHARLIE WATTS and MARSHALL CHESS.

Trevor Lawrence and His Fabulous Rolling Stones

Continuing our celebration of the 35th anniversary of "Sticky Fingers", here's a video of THE ROLLING STONES from April 1971 performing their then-current single "Brown Sugar" on "Top Of The Pops". It's a pre-recorded backing track with live vocals, and features TREVOR LAWRENCE faking BOBBY KEYS' sax playing:

Magazine of the Week #16

The April 1983 issue of GUITAR PLAYER magazine didn't have much in the way of photos, but its got a fascinating interview with KEITH RICHARDS. In the great cover story by TOM WHEELER Keith discusses guitars, guitar playing, equipment, playing with WOODY, playing with MICK TAYLOR, etc.

There's also an article on guitar-maker DOUG YOUNG about Keith's custom solidbodies, and an interview with ALAN ROGAN, "Managing The Stones' Gear On The Road". The magazine lives up to its title, with lots of interesting technical info, especially for guitar players and musicians.

Also in this issue, a few cool ads, including JOHN COUGER and LARRY CRANE for ALVAREZ guitars, and THE JOHN COUGAR BAND for PEAVEY.....

'80s Flashback

The RBALLY blog has been posting a lot of great MP3s, but of special interest are a couple of live shows from two of the best American '80s bands, arguably in their prime, THE REPLACEMENTS (from July 1, 1985) and R.E.M. (from 1984).

Both bands certainly were breaths of fresh air when they hit the scene in the early 1980s. And what are they up to these days? Apparently, the surviving original Replacements have reunited for a pair of songs that will be on a forthcoming "best of" collection. Meanwhile, R.E.M. just refuses to go away!

Anyway, you need to check out these shows - they're fun stuff. And of course there are some cool covers - R.E.M. covers THE VELVET UNDERGROUND and THE BYRDS, and The Replacements cover DAVID BOWIE and ROBYN HITCHCOCK.

40 years ago today

April 20, 1966:

Hard at work on what would become the "Revolver" LP, THE BEATLES attempt to record "And Your Bird Can Sing". They would not be happy with this day's recording, however, and would record a remake the following week. But a mix of this day's "take 2" would eventually end up on the "Anthology 2" CD, the infamous "giggling take".

Featured here is that take, but OOPS'ed to remove the giggling vocal overdub, so we can better hear the song itself. This OOPS version appeared on the bootleg "Anthology More".

Rolling Hits

This is a UK release from 1981 - a 12-inch 45 RPM by "ROLLING HITS". Capitalizing on the success of "STARS ON 45" (I don't have to explain that, do I?), the A-side is their dance-beat-driven medley of ROLLING STONES hits called "MEDLEY". It clocks in at just under six minutes.

The songs included are:

Satisfaction / Get Off My Cloud / As Tears Go By / Let's Spend The Night Together / Honky Tonk Women / Paint It Black / Jumpin' Jack Flash / Brown Sugar / Bitch / Miss You / It's Only Rock 'n Roll

The labels says "Produced by H. Saban & S. Levy" and "Original Sound Recording made by Saban Records". The B-side is a Saban and Levy song called "Gonna Catch You".

In August 1983, TOM BATIUK featured a week-long plot in his daily FUNKY WINKERBEAN comic strip in which the ROLLING STONES are coming to town. Seems like an odd thing to do, as the Stones certainly were not coming to town at the time, and the "Undercover" LP wasn't out yet.

I have six daily strips, I guess it wasn't continued in the Sunday paper, but I don't know for sure. MICK JAGGER shows up in a few of them. Here are the first two:

The Ballad Of John And Yoko

On this day in history - April 14, 1969:

With GEORGE HARRISON unavailable and RINGO STARR working on "The Magic Christian", JOHN LENNON and PAUL MCCARTNEY show up at EMI Studios for what was supposed to have been a mixing session, but end up recording Lennon's new song instead.

Recorded and mixed in one day, with John on guitars and vocal, and Paul on drums, bass, piano, and backing vocals, "The Ballad of John and Yoko" would be the A-side of the next BEATLES single.

Here is a center-channel extraction from the 5.1 mix, which allows us to hear essentially just John's guitar and lead vocal.

The second track here is a cover of the song from an old LP on Dot Records called "The Plastic Cow Goes Moooooog", an album of Moog-based covers of contemporary hits.

Magazine of the Week #15

The April 1985 issue of MUSICIAN features "Mick Musically - Jagger on the making of his all-star solo LP". The cover story by BILL FLANAGAN is a pretty solid music-oriented piece on MICK JAGGER's first solo LP, "She's The Boss".

Mick talks about making the album, and we also hear from HERBIE HANCOCK and CHUCK LEAVELL. Mick discusses his vocal technique, songwriting, playing guitar, producing, etc.

There's also a full-page ad for the LP, a nice illustration of Mick, and a couple of pages on THE REPLACEMENTS, who had recently signed to Sire Records. We learn that PAUL WESTERBERG uses a "gray guitar", and BOB STINSON uses "a heavy black one"!

Early Yoko

Everything ever recorded or filmed will eventually turn up on the internet.

Gather around youngsters, and let old Uncle Culpa tell you about the ancient days of yore, back when music lovers first began to discover the joys of using home computers and digital trickery to create their own "re-mixes" and "outfakes" of tracks by their favorite artists.

One of the first compilations of this sort of thing appeared way back in 2001, when some enterprising BEATLES fans put together the ground-breaking CD "Men and Horses, Hoops and Garters".

And now, the good folks over at the ZINHOF blog have dusted off this crusty gem so that a new generation can hear how it was done back in the old days.

Complete Live'R

BIG O has MP3s from "Live'R Than You'll Ever Be: Complete Version", the classic STONES shows from November 9, 1969 in Oakland, California. They're featuring the complete second show. Its from the excellent-quality audience recording that was used as one of the first-ever vinyl bootlegs (released back in December 1969), but this version has been re-mastered and is complete.

The "Let It Bleed" LP wasn't released until the '69 tour was over, so there are five songs that the audience would not have heard before - four from "Let It Bleed", plus "You Gotta Move". Six, if you count "Little Queenie", which had not been on any Stones record at the time.

Sticky Fingers Rarities

This month marks the 35th anniversary of "Sticky Fingers", the LP that launched the "Rolling Stones Records" label and introduced the infamous (and now ubiquitous!) tongue logo.

Three of the tracks on the LP had alternate versions that were officially released; different versions of "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" were mistakenly issued on early copies of the "Hot Rocks" LP, and a different mix of "Sway" was released as the B-side of the "Wild Horses" single. None of them have been released on official CDs.

Happy Birthday Ravi Shankar

Born April 7, 1920, today is RAVI SHANKAR's 86th birthday.

In August 1971, just after "The Concert For Bangla Desh" at Madison Square Garden, his first single on Apple Records (actually a 3-song EP) was released, produced by his buddy GEORGE HARRISON.

Loop John Beatle

40 years ago today:

On April 7, 1966 in an afternoon session at EMI's Studio 3, THE BEATLES, with GEORGE MARTIN producing and GEOFF EMERICK engineering, used manually controlled tape loops to add effects to "Mark I", the JOHN LENNON song they had begun recording the day before at the first session for what would become their "Revolver" LP. The song would be renamed "Tomorrow Never Knows".

These are all very small files of each of the five loops used on the finished recording:

Magazine of the Week #14

Another of my all-time favorites, the April 1975 issue of HIT PARADER. With LISA ROBINSON running the magazine, and LENNY KAYE contributing, there were some great issues of HP back then.

Lisa's interview with KEITH RICHARDS is apparently from late in 1974. Keith tells Lisa that he'd "love for MICK TAYLOR to do some writing because it would remove some of the burden from his and JAGGER's shoulders: "The more writers in the band, the better"". Yeah right!




About BILL WYMAN's "Monkey Grip" LP, Keith says it was "a good try", but he'd have "put a few oldies on it".

We're told that Keith lives part of the year in Switzerland, and they discuss his "forthcoming skiing plans". Keith says "Oh, wait till you see me, I'm dynamite". I can imagine!

Lisa brings up the "C**ks**ker Blues" film, and Keith says "we may do a pornographic album to go along with it...sort of like a soundtrack. Everyone would have to contribute a pornographic song. We've got one from DR. JOHN called "How Much P***y Can You Eat". If more people come up with them, then we could put it out. I'm still working on my contribution".


Also in this issue, Lisa interviews RAY DAVIES, a nice article on GEORGE HARRISON (with a Harrison centerfold!), and among the song lyrics, "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" (as recorded by The Rolling Stones)".

Mick Taylor vs Ron Wood, Round 1

Welcome to Round One of MICK TAYLOR vs RON WOOD.

The rules are simple. In each round, each of the guitarists will get a shot at playing lead on the song chosen for that round. They will play with the house band, which consists of MICK JAGGER (vocal), KEITH RICHARDS (guitar), BILL WYMAN (bass), and CHARLIE WATTS (drums). Featured supporting musicians will vary, as will the location and dates of the performances.

The song for this round is the ROBERT JOHNSON classic "Love In Vain", which TAYLOR had recorded with THE ROLLING STONES, and played live with them from 1969 to 1973. WOOD had often played the song as part of THE FACES' repertoire.

So, in one corner we have MICK TAYLOR, performing in Australia on February 27, 1973, at the age of 25. His supporting musicians are BOBBY KEYS (sax), JIM PRICE (trombone), and NICKY HOPKINS (piano).

In the other corner, the challenger, RON ("WOODY") WOOD, in Memphis, Tennessee on June 28, 1978, already an old-timer at the age of 31. His performance in this round features the support of IAN STEWART (piano) and IAN MCLAGAN (organ).
