Filming "Hey Jude"

July 30, 1968.

38 years ago today, THE BEATLES were filmed in EMI Studio 2 by Britain's National Music Council for a documentary called "Music!". They were recording rehearsals for the upcoming recording sessions (which would be held at Trident Studios, not EMI) for what would be their next single, "Hey Jude".

The documentary ended up with two Beatles segments, one of which is presented here as an avi file. Its about two-and-a-half minutes, 30 MB, great quality. Notice that in the rehearsal here, GEORGE HARRISON is in the control room with GEORGE MARTIN, while PAUL (piano), JOHN (acoustic guitar), and RINGO (drums) play. Very nice stuff.

Back Street Smog

"Smog tested and approved."

GOLDEN SMOG is back! The super-group, featuring members of WILCO, SOUL ASYLUM, and THE JAYHAWKS, has just released a new CD, "Another Fine Day".

But going way back, here they are with a lovely cover of THE ROLLING STONES' "Back Street Girl". This is ripped from the 1992 CHRIS MARS CD single "Monkey Sees", where its the "Mystery Bonus Track" - track #13 on a 3-song disc.

Arthur Alexander

ARTHUR ALEXANDER's "come-back" album, his first album in 21 years, would also be his last. The wonderful "Lonely Just Like Me" was released shortly before his unexpected death in 1993.

Arthur had written and sung a handful of hits in the '60s. THE BEATLES covered his "Anna (Go To Him)" on their first LP, and THE ROLLING STONES covered his "You Better Move On".

"Lonely Just Like Me", produced by BEN VAUGHN, was a great CD full of Alexander originals, including a superb remake of his 1975 hit "Every Day I Have To Cry". Every one of the twelve songs is a gem.

The CD is, sadly, long out of print now, so here ya go:

01 IF ITS REALLY GOT TO BE THIS WAY
02 GO HOME GIRL
03 SALLY SUE BROWN
04 MR. JOHN
05 LONELY JUST LIKE ME
06 EVERY DAY I HAVE TO CRY
07 IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALL
08 GENIE IN THE JUG
09 JOHNNY HEARTBREAK
10 ALL THE TIME

Magazine of the Week #30

With MICK JAGGER's birthday tomorrow, our Magazine of the Week is the August 1982 issue of Dell's long-running HOROSCOPE, "The World's Leading Astrological Magazine", which featured a cover story on the famous Leo by DORIS KAYE.

So "what makes Mick tick?"

Let's have a look at some excerpts. We learn that in Mick's horoscope, a "concentration in Leo, the "show-biz" sign, accounts for his stage prescence, his charisma, his "larger-than-life" personality projection, and his intense sexuality."

"Jupiter is the "larger-than-life" influence, Pluto (ruler of sexy Scorpio) is the promoter of that potent sexuality, while the Sun (ego, individuality, profession, and public acclaim) and Mercury (mental perception and, in Leo, highly concentrative) further accentuate the compelling Leonine prescence of the performer."

"Mars is a further emphasis on sex, as well as on aggressiveness, defiance, rebelliousness. In fact, Mars in the tenth house can often describe a person who agressively pursues a career and is quite capable of fighting and clawing his or her way into the desired place in the sun. In Taurus, physical and material values are emphasized - sex and money, for example."

"The Venus-Uranus square can describe perverse, "kinky" sexuality, a desire for multiple partners, sometimes the inability to maintain a relationship."

"There are no planets in water signs; four are in a fire sign, four in earth signs, and two in an air sign - but none in water, the element of emotion, understanding, sympathy, empathy, sensitivity."

Mick's chart also comes up short in the cardinal signs department. But then "Mick has so much Leo that leading a parade would come naturally to him; but the parades led by Leos always take new routes".

"Mars could be responsible for the violence of his musical subject matter (rape, sadism, etc), but Mars' position in Taurus would also clue him in to the fact that these subjects sell".

We also get insights into things like the possibility for "a barrier to spiritual awareness" and "occasional aridity in self-expression".

Looking to the future, we're told "it seems that the forthcoming Saturn transit through Scorpio (late November of 1982 to early May of 1983, then from late August of 1983 to mid-November of 1985), which will dynamically challenge his Leo and Taurus planets, could bring major changes into his life, along with many re-evaluations and changing viewpoints on a few important matters".

"In 1985, 1986, 1987, progressed Mars conjoining his natal and progressed Uranus in Gemini is another sort of blockbuster in terms of change and new beginnings. Too, 1985 and 1986 will bring his progressed Sun into conjunction with his natal Venus in Virgo, which can reflect pleasantly in his emotional and/or marital life."

"There is much potential for even greater - in one way or another - accomplishments in the years ahead for this remarkable and magnetic public figure."

Summer Reruns: Interview With Mick Jagger

Don't worry - there won't be too many reruns, just a few. With MICK's birthday coming up, I thought it was a good time for a reposting of the rare 1971 promo LP "Interview With Mick Jagger by Tom Donahue":

Beatle Covers: Jessi Colter

"Anytime you feel the pain, hey dude, refrain....."

Some would say the only thing better than finding an old LP with a BEATLES cover on it is finding an old LP with two Beatles covers on it. Like last week's HUGH MASEKELA post.

Or JESSI COLTER's 1976 "Diamond In The Rough", which does not appear to have been released on CD (please correct me if I'm wrong). Co-produced by hubby WAYLON JENNINGS (also co-guitarist), the LP gives us a nice rockin' version of "Get Back", and a great version of "Hey Jude" where she's actually singing "hey dude" instead! The record cover and label say "Hey Jude", but she's singing "Hey Dude".....

Happy Birthday Cat Stevens

Born Stephen Demetre Georgiou on July 21, 1948, The Artist Formerly Known as CAT STEVENS celebrates his 58th birthday today. Cat, of course, sold millions of records in the 1970s before embracing Islam, changing his name to YUSUF ISLAM, and giving up the pop star business. He would later return to recording under his new name, at least on a limited basis.

So for our audio celebration, first we have Yusuf with the beautiful update of one of his Cat classics, "Peace Train 2003":

PEACE TRAIN 2003

Then we go back to October 1973 for a live Cat Stevens show from the Aquarius Theater in Boston, MA:

03 ON THE ROAD TO FIND OUT
04 WILD WORLD
05 MOONSHADOW
06 KING OF TREES
07 BAD PENNY
08 THE BOY WITH THE MOON AND STAR ON HIS HEAD
09 THE HURT
10 THE FOREIGNER SUITE

Beatle Covers: Hugh Masekela

Perhaps not quite as obscure as HEDGE AND DONNA, here's another recent vinyl find. A double album by HUGH MASEKELA called "24 Karat Hits". Released in October 1968 on Verve Records, it contained tracks from two earlier Masekela LPs, "The Americanization of Ooga Booga" and "Hugh Masekela's Next Album".

Its got an interesting instrumental version of "Norwegian Wood", and a very cool six-and-a-half minute mostly-instrumental version of "If I Needed Someone". Both of the songs were recorded in August 1966 and originally released on "Hugh Masekela's Next Album" in December 1966:

Magazine of the Week #29

This week its the July 1978 issue of CREEM, with the cover story "Ron Wood Achieves Puberty! Glimmer Twins Held Responsible" by BARBARA CHARONE.

We get some news about the forthcoming ROLLING STONES LP: "Tentatively titled "Some Girls", the new album marks a return to the glory days of "Exile On Main Street"". Six years, and they're longing for the "glory days". Huh.
From a list of 200 possible album titles, they briefly considered "Don't Steal My Girlfriend" and "More Fast Numbers"".

Woody says "When I was with Rod, it was always Rod, Rod, Rod! But no one can say its all Mick with the Stones."

In "Rock 'n' Roll News" we get this nice tidbit: "BACKSTAGE PASSES: At Lou Reed's recent show at the Roxy in L.A., Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood snuck into Lou's dressing room and de-tuned all of his guitars (before showtime). Lou was not in an amiable mood, though, and promptly ejected Heckle and Jeckle from the backstage premises." We also learn that ""retired" ex-Beatle" JOHN LENNON "has been supposedly grabbed for the title role in William A. Levey's "The Street Messiah", a pic about a rock star who gets religion".

Also, "Mick Taylor insisted he will be touring shortly, no matter what CBS says about it".

In "Lou Reed: No More Heroes, But Plenty Of Respect", Lou is asked about BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN's uncredited vocal cameo on "Street Hassle": "He was in the studio below and for that little passage I'd written, I thought he'd be just perfect. 'Cause I tend to screw those things up.......I'm too much of a smartass. And I knew Bruce would do it seriously, 'cause he really is of the street, y'know?"

Then there's "Bob Marley Battles De Blood Clot, Mon", a nice story on THE CLASH, and a spread on the big "California Jam" with pics of STEVEN TYLER, DAVE MASON, STEVIE NICKS, BOB WELCH & MICK FLEETWOOD, ANN WILSON, and TED NUGENT.

In the "Confessions of a Film Fox" column, it says "While Bianca Jagger basks in the spotlight of "The Ringer" (shooting on location in Munich), talk has it that her sometimes (sigh) estranged spouse Mick is wanted by French director Roger Vadim to star in his next picture." Hey, if Vadim wants Mick, he'd better get him before Mick starts making that "Kalki" film! (see here, here, and here).

Record reviews include "The Last Waltz", TELEVISION's "Adventure", WINGS' "London Town" ("hardly the worst Wings project"), ELVIS COSTELLO's "This Year's Model", MARLEY's "Kaya", and more. TV reviews include "Second City Television" and "Quark".

More Leonard

Well I'll be dogged.

A couple of weeks ago I posted MP3s of a live LEONARD COHEN boot from Switzerland, May 21, 1993 (too see that post, click here). Now I see that CHOCOREVE has posted what looks like the complete show, with nine songs that I didn't have!

Here's the page:

Beatle Covers: Hedge and Donna

Yes, I know that Beatle covers are everywhere - just in the past year, I've seen (and downloaded!) hundreds of them from various blogs. So now its always exciting when I find one that I've never heard of before.

Recently, I've managed to find a few vinyl LPs in second-hand stores with some great Beatle covers on them. Here's one from an early '70s LP by HEDGE AND DONNA (Hedge and Donna Capers) called "Revolution" (and no, they don't do the song "Revolution") on the Polydor label. Its a very nice version of "She Said She Said", which they really made their own, as a male-female duet sort of thing. JOE WALSH is credited with playing electric and acoustic guitars, and its produced by TIN EAR.

And here it is:

Christmas In July

Its just been too darn hot lately. So here are a couple of Christmas tracks, maybe they'll help us cool down a bit.

First, JOHN LENNON's acoustic demo of his "Happy Christmas (war is over)", and then an early mix of the studio version, without the choir and full production:

The 'Mats Hit The Fans

Everywhere I look these days I seem to be running into THE REPLACEMENTS, but as far as I can tell, no one has posted their cassette-only release "The Sh*t Hits The Fans" (the asterisk is mine).

Recorded by a fan at their 11/11/84 show in Oklahoma City, the tape was confiscated and later released officially on cassette by Twin/Tone Records. An incredibly fun show in surprisingly great quality, with lots of sloppy covers and cover fragments, including "Jumpin' Jack Flask" (hey, that's how its listed!).

A detailed description of the recording, including the full track listing, is here:

http://www.22designs.com/foshaytower2/shtf_net.html

Here is the complete recording, ripped from my old cassette. Its two large files, "Side 1" and "Side 2", each running more than 25 minutes:

Lucinda Live Covers

Here are a couple of live covers from LUCINDA WILLIAMS, from September 9, 1991 in Santa Monica, CA, taken from the 2-CD boot "Passionate Kisses".

The ROBERT JOHNSON classic (also covered by THE ROLLING STONES, of course) "Stop Breakin' Down", and BOB DYLAN's "Positively 4th Street". Sorry, but there's about 2 minutes of crowd noise before she starts "Stop Breakin' Down".

Magazine of the Week #28

This week's magazine is the July 1974 issue of CREEM, featuring a very nice cover photo of the "old" ROLLING STONES ("The Way They Were"), and an "Exclusive MICK JAGGER Interview And Poster".

This issue has the first of a two-part Jagger interview with ROY CARR - "from first lay to Bottom Lining back in the USA; the Stone truth all the way". In this part, they run through the basic Stones history up to BRIAN JONES' leaving the band. Here's one out-of-context quote from Mick: "I never liked "Revolver" very much. I don't like the Beatles".

Elsewhere in the issue, ROBERT CHRISTGAU gives BIG STAR's "Radio City" a "B plus", and BARBRA STREISAND's "The Way We Were" a "B minus".

In "Rock 'n' Roll News" we read this: "Stones bassist Bill Wyman has taken it upon himself to catalogue as extensive a history of his band as he's able. If you have any tapes of early Stones, regardless of their sound quality, he'd like to know about them. (Later years are well-represented with bootlegs etc. so the earlier the better.) You can write to Bill c/o CREEM."

In "Confessions of a Film Fox" we learn that "Bianca Jagger was dressed to the nines for the London Charity Premier of "Paper Moon". Mrs. J was stunning in scarlet, velvet and furs. You know right out of the pages of "Vogue". Sorry we can't say the same about Mick. He was dressed early country with a greatcoat, pullover, a scarf knotted at the neck, and an open fly!"

There's a book review of GUY PEELAERT's now-classic "Rock Dreams". As we see from one of the pictures from the book, KEITH RICHARDS was doing the pirate thing long before JOHNNY DEPP called! (Is "Rock Dreams" currently in print? I'd love to get a copy!)

Also, reviews of LPs by ROXY MUSIC and NEW YORK DOLLS (reviewed by LESTER BANGS), CAT STEVENS (reviewed by ROBERT CHRISTGAU), and THE VELVET UNDERGROUND's "Live 1969" (reviewed by PATTI SMITH).

I had been meaning to post, at some point, a collection of LOU REED's pre-VELVET UNDERGROUND recordings, like "The Ostrich" and "Cycle Annie". Magazine of the Week #27

Our "Magazine of the Week #27" is the aforementioned July 1979 issue of TROUSER PRESS.

Trouser Press was a great magazine (originally called "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press") that IRA ROBBINS got going in the late '70s and focused more on newer (and usually British) artists than the other popular rock mags at the time, but still had plenty of "Classic Rock" type stuff as well.

There's a KEITH RICHARDS interview by PHILLIPE MANOEUVRE from January 10, 1979 in Paris, and a RONNIE WOOD interview by DAVE SCHULPS and IRA ROBBINS from New York in May 1979.

Keith talks about his recent solo single: "I did "Run Rudolph Run" in November '76, while I was listening through all the tapes for "Love You Live". I did it with this young Canadian drummer, Mike Driscoll, who works with Mick Taylor. There's just him and me on it. I saw a copy today - it says "Stereo" but I know for a fact its mono - there's no way, 'cause it was just some microphones across the room, and its all overdubbed. I did the bass, and maybe three or four guitars, Driscoll played drums, and Stu is on piano."

Keith on "The Harder They Come": "That's Charlie and me and Ronnie's playing piano. That came about from a jam in the studio just after the tour this past summer. It was just a "five-minutes-lets-do-it" with all the Stones. Because nobody knew what they were doing, everybody was playing wrong, except Charlie, who was playing perfect time, so then I wiped everybody else off, and did it all again - replaced one guitar first, then I redid the bass. Eventually we redid Charlie's drums again, to get a better sound. What you have there is a record that's been made out of another record, except there's nothing of the original left. We used the same piece of tape, though."

Keith also talks a little about BILLY PRESTON's stint with The Stones, and says "When Billy turned up at the start of the '76 tour with his own sound man, that's when it became obvious to me that I couldn't work with Billy and The Stones like that".

Woody talks about his "Gimme Some Neck" LP, The New Barbarians, Faces, etc. Here's what he had to say about the Stones performance on "Saturday Night Live" in 1978: "Oh, the one where we were all hoarse. My voice was the first to go, and they all went "ha ha". Then Keith's went. Then Mick's went the day of the recording." Why? "'Cause we'd been up partying for three days straight. Trying to rehearse around that lot is impossible. You get Belushi, Ackroyd, and Bill Murray in and they're screaming and shouting. When the show went up, just before we went on camera, I was spraying the studio with Chloraseptic". Speaking of the actual broadcast performance, he says "Mick came up to me when I had my eyes closed and put his tongue in my mouth. Didn't do me any good with me mother-in-law".

There's also a review of the May 7th New Barbarians show at Madison Square Garden, a two-page center-spread "Faces Family Tree", and a full-page ad from the "Brian Jones Memorial Club" (click here).

And as if that weren't enough, the magazine also includes articles on NICO, VIV STANSHALL, and THE RAMONES, plus reviews of BOB DYLAN's "At Budokan", LOU REED's "The Bells", and PATTI SMITH's "Wave", and the back cover is an ad for BOWIE's "Lodger".

Happy Birthday Ringo

Born RICHARD STARKEY on July 7, 1940, today is RINGO STARR's 66th birthday.

Our birthday celebration starts with a 30-second anti-drug radio spot that Ringo recorded back in 1973, warning us that "dangerous drugs are not an escape, they're a trap", while the drum break from "The End" plays.

Then we go to the March 1973 rehearsal sessions for "I'm The Greatest", the JOHN LENNON song that would lead off Ringo's excellent RICHARD PERRY-produced LP "Ringo". These rehearsals feature Lennon on piano and vocals, Ringo on drums, GEORGE HARRISON on guitar, and KLAUS VOORMAN on bass. (On the finished recording, Ringo would sing lead, with BILLY PRESTON on organ.)

We wrap things up with a 1987 outtake from an abandoned Ringo LP - Ringo's version of the ARTHUR ALEXANDER classic (previously covered by the ROLLING STONES) "You Better Move On".

The Housewife, The Referee, and The Undertaker

Here's a great live show from LEONARD COHEN, recorded at Congresshalle, Zurich, May 21, 1993, taken from the boot "The Housewife, The Referee, and The Undertaker". Includes a beautiful version of "The Future".

In my opinion, this bootleg is better than the official 1994 "Cohen Live" CD, and along with his 1993 appearance on the PBS "Austin City Limits" show, represents Cohen at his best.

'80s Dance Party Extra: Lou at the Movies

Okay, okay - I just can't seem to stop dancing, so here are two tracks that probably should have been big dance hits, but weren't.

After one little hit single with "I Love You Suzanne", suddenly LOU REED was everywhere - movie soundtracks, dance records, tribute LPs, scooter commercials........

In 1985 Lou had songs in two different (and now largely forgotten) movies. These are both ripped from vinyl:

"Hot Hips" from "Perfect" pretty much followed the "I Love You Suzanne" formula, with minimalist lyrics accompanied by a simple repetitive guitar part and a fun beat. It also features a slide guitar, which is a bit odd for a Lou song.

"My Love Is Chemical" from "White Nights" has a bit of a slower dance beat. This one is strange if only for the fact that it was not written by Lou and that it was produced by PHIL RAMONE. I could be wrong, but FERNANDO SAUNDERS does not seem to be involved. And the backing vocals are very un-Lou-like. I wonder whose idea it was........

'80s Dance Party, part 10

Okay, this is it - the end of our '80s Dance Party. A few more times around the dance floor, then I'll be off to the cobbler because I've danced holes in my shoes.

Perhaps LOU REED's most under-appreciated album (and there have been quite a few!) was his 1986 release "Mistrial", which gave him another minor hit single with "No Money Down". And then, in the spirit of the times, RCA issued a wonderful 12-inch dance record featuring remixes of two of the other tracks from the LP, "The Original Wrapper" and "Video Violence", proving that Lou is indeed "a trendy guy". And check out FERNANDO SAUNDERS' incredible bass playing:

Also released in 1985, the second single from MICK JAGGER's "She's The Boss" was "Lucky In Love". The 12-inch vinyl featured a "Dance Mix", a "Dub Mix", and the "Single Mix".
