Electronic Sound
The GAMBRINUS MP3 blog (at their new address!) has posted GEORGE HARRISON's 1969 Zapple release "Electronic Sound". I'm really not up on whether or not this is in print somewhere in the world, but it has NOT been in print in the U.S. for a long time now ("Long Long Long"?).....
This LP was another example of Harrison's occasional credit-where-credit-is-due neglect. Apparently BERNIE KRAUSE claimed to be responsible for one side of the LP, recorded as he gave a Moog synthesizer demonstration to Harrison in California in 1968. Krause was originally to have been credited on the cover, but that credit was at least mostly obscured when it was finally released. Krause would later pursue legal action, but I don't know whatever came of it.
Other similar issues for Harrison include: lifting the first line of his song "Something" from a song called "Something In The Way She Moves" which was on JAMES TAYLOR's 1968 Apple LP; not crediting DELANEY BRAMLETT for co-writing "My Sweet Lord"; being sued because "My Sweet Lord" sounds too much like "He's So Fine"; and not crediting PAUL MCCARTNEY for co-writing "I Me Mine" (Paul wrote the chorus - we clearly hear this happening on the infamous Nagra audio from the "Let It Be" sessions - although I'm sure Paul was not concerned).
Anyway, here's the page with "Electronic Sound":

2007 Magazine of the Week #4
The January 1983 issue of CREEM features a ROGER DALTREY cover story by DON MCLEESE.
McCleese caught up with Roger during THE WHO's "farewell tour". Daltrey talks about getting the album, "It's Hard", made:
"Its remarkable that it actually ever got made," he said, "considering the state of Pete at Christmas. He was almost a write-off.....The band in a way now is more of a band than its ever been. Pete's really much more a member of the band than the leader of the band as such."
"Its really strange. There's still a part of me that says he was totally in control all the time. He's definitely schizophrenic. There's half of Pete that wants to be a family man and a Meher Baba person. And there's the other half that's just totally decadent. Totally. And they fight all the time, those two characters."
And when asked "why should The Who continue to exist at all?", Daltrey responds, "I think we're a bloody good rock band. And I don't think there are a lot of good rock bands left."
Also in this issue, AEROSMITH, IGGY POP, and THE STRAY CATS. Record reviews include SPRINGSTEEN's "Nebraska" and R.E.M.'s "Chronic Town" EP.

Mind Games II
I just found out that jazz saxophonist MICHAEL BRECKER died on January 13th. You'll recall that pedal-steel player "SNEAKY" PETE KLEINOW died on January 6th. Both men played on JOHN LENNON's 1973 "Mind Games" LP.
Maybe somebody should check on JIM KELTNER, you know, just in case.....
Seriously though, Brecker was one of the greats, winning 11 Grammys. He died from leukemia, age 57. You can read more about him here:
http://www.michaelbrecker.com/
And if you hurry, the links are still good on the original un-remixed version of the "Mind Games" CD, at my Sneaky Pete post here:

2007 Magazine of the Week #3
In 1981 Rolling Stone magazine began publishing a monthly music tabloid called THE RECORD. They would soon lose the tabloid format and make it just another slick magazine. Here we'll take a quick look at the 3rd issue, dated January 1982 (although the cover says "January 1981").
The cover story is an interview with ROD STEWART, but there is plenty of ROLLING STONES stuff in here, covering their 1981 tour. There's "Stones Tour Is A Rousing Success", "Stones Tour Is A Wireless Wonder", "Staging The Stones", "Opening Acts Primed Audiences For Stones", a 2-page photo spread "On The Road With The Stones", and "Viewpoint: Hail The Conquering Heroes".
In a section called "The Hit Man", we get a little gossip:
"THE ROLLING STONES VISIT THE COUNTING HOUSE: Can you believe the greed of the Rolling Stones? Its enough of an insult that they sold seats behind the stage for all the shows on the tour and regardless of what you hear about a revolving stage, it only revolves during a few numbers. But did you know that the Stones insisted that some of the opening acts on the tour buy their own tickets to the gigs? We're talking about tickets for wives, girlfriends, and relatives - not outrageous requests for cocaine dealers."
In their "Top One Hundred Albums", its FOREIGNER's "4" at #1, with the Stones' "Tatoo You" at #2. The page also gives us the Top 10 LPs from 16 years earlier, January 1966, and we see that the Stones also had the #2 LP then , with "December's Children". THE BEATLES "Rubber Soul" was at #1.
Also in this issue, BOBBY AND THE MIDNITES, DAVID BOWIE, and BOB EZRIN.

Oldham Radio
No, not "old Ham Radio" - its ANDREW LOOG OLDHAM I'm talking about!
He's got a great show on Sirius Radio's "Underground Garage" channel. He plays some pretty cool stuff - rare, obscure, and otherwise. Here's some info from the website:
The Andrew Loog Oldham Program
Monday to Friday 6 pm - 8 pm ET
Saturdays 11 am - 3 pm ET
Rebroadcast Sundays 3 pm - 7 pm ET
The Rolling Stones' original manager and producer provides insights into and anecdotes about the early days of the British invasion. He ties it all together by showing a direct link between those glory days, and what's hot at this very moment. Compelling radio!!!
And here's an MP3 of a brief (2-minute) segment to give you an idea of what its all about:
ALO THURS NOV 2 BREAK 4
Check it out - and many thanks to "the man in the red Prada slippers"!

Sneaky Pete (and Dr. O'Boogie)
As most of you probably know by now, 'SNEAKY' PETE KLEINOW, a founding member of the FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS, died Saturday at the age of 72.
There's more info on Pete here:
http://www.sneakypetekleinow.com/
Pete was the pedal steel player of choice for the early '70s California country-rock crowd, playing with folks like LINDA RONSTADT, JACKSON BROWNE, THE EAGLES, and lots of others.
One of the LPs Pete played on was JOHN LENNON's "Mind Games", which he's all over.
So this seems like as good a time as any for a posting of the original, out-of-print, un-remixed version of the "Mind Games" CD. Speaking of which........
I certainly give Yoko a lot of credit for all the great John Lennon music she's made available over the years, and I appreciate the remixes she's done, but I do tend to think that she should somehow keep the original mixes in print also. After all, the original mixes were the only mixes ever actually approved by John - that was the way he intended those albums to be heard. (The remixed version of the "John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band" CD still freaks me out - its definitely not the way John mixed it! And that's not to mention the "bonus tracks" - having what was the LP's beautiful conclusion of "God" and "My Mummy's Dead" immediately followed by "Power To The People" diminishes the impact of a powerful piece of work. In my opinion.)
Anyway, for your listening pleasure, here's John Lennon, with Sneaky Pete Kleinow, and the original, non-re-mixed version of the "Mind Games" CD:
01 MIND GAMES
02 TIGHT AS
03 AISUMASEN (I'M SORRY)
04 ONE DAY (AT A TIME)
05 BRING ON THE LUCIE
06 NUTOPIAN INTERNATIONAL ANTHEM
07 INTUITION
08 OUT THE BLUE
09 ONLY PEOPLE
10 I KNOW (I KNOW)
11 YOU ARE HERE
12 MEAT CITY
Yeah, there's nothing like that original mix of "Nutopian International Anthem".....!

2007 Magazine of the Week #1
Its time to kick off the 2007 edition of "Magazine of the Week". The May 1970 issue of HIT PARADER featured "The Apple Story", giving us 14 pages on THE BEATLES' Apple Records, including a discography.
Except for the covers, Hit Parader at the time was strictly black & white on pretty cheap paper, so the photo reproductions just weren't very good, but still this is one of the coolest single issues of the era.
With a cover date of May 1970. it would have gone to press before the official announcement of the Beatle break-up. There's a basic rundown of the history of Apple, and some of the original press releases. We read that "New Label and Recording Concept" Zapple ("a division of Apple Records") will "emphasize a series of 'spoken word' albums and some music releases of a more wide-ranging and esoteric nature". We learn that, at the time of the February 3, 1969 Zapple press release, "a spoken word album recorded by poet-writer RICHARD BRAUTIGAN" was "now being pressed". It goes on to say this:
"Other well-known poet-writers already committed to Zapple releases include: LAURENCE FERLINGHETTI - America's best-selling 'serious' poet; poet-playwrite MICHAEL MCCLURE; veteran literary figures KENNETH PATCHEN and CHARLES OLSON and poet-essayist ALLEN GINSBERG. Additionally, Zapple will release one of the late LENNY BRUCE's last concerts as an album."
There's a feature on the "Apple Artists", including JAMES TAYLOR, MARY HOPKIN, JACKIE LOMAX (pictured above, with GEORGE HARRISON), THE IVEYS (no mention that they had already changed their name to BADFINGER and had a big hit with PAUL MCCARTNEY's "Come And Get It"), BILLY PRESTON, WHITE TRASH, and others.
With this photo of Harrison with RITCHIE HAVENS (not an Apple artist), we're told that "all of the Beatles maintain a constant awareness of the rest of the rock scene".
There's a couple of pages on THE ROLLING STONES, with some brief quotes, seemingly from KEITH RICHARD. On plans for another live album: "Not after the last one!". Another quote is "we're not trying to make money.....we're just trying to make records".
Then there are articles on KING CRIMSON, BB KING, ROBERT PLANT, JOHN MAYALL, and "Pop's Pied Piper" IAN ANDERSON.
And of course there's "Words To Your Favorite Hits", including "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window", "You Can't Always Get What You Want", "Whole Lotta Love", "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight" ("as recorded by TRASH"), and lots more.
Not bad for 35 cents!

Heart Play
When I posted the TRIBE LP the other day (see here), I mentioned that "its one of the few Beatle oddities that I did NOT see posted anywhere on the internet in the past year". So now folks are asking what are some of the other "Beatle oddities" that I haven't seen on the internet.
Well, for instance, there's "Heart Play - Unfinished Dialogue", the JOHN LENNON and YOKO ONO "spoken word documentary". The 1983 Polydor LP has never been officially released on CD.
From the back cover:
"These conversations with John and Yoko took place in the late summer and the fall of 1980. The background noises set the scenes: early morning talks in the Lennons' kitchen with John running back and forth making tea; afternoon walks along Central Park West; late nights in the recording studio; evenings sitting at a sidewalk cafe in the rain. The recordings were made for a documentary on the Lennons and for the Playboy interview....."
And here it is, in two parts:

The Red Vines
THE RED VINES are a new unsigned band led by singer/songwriters IVY BOERSMA (pictured) and RHYS GEORGE (formerly of Krease). They've been putting on some fantastic live shows and are about to unleash their first CD, recorded by Philadelphia legend GEORGE MANNEY.
Here's one of the tracks, written and sung by Ivy, called "Unbreakable Glass":

"the best examples of the Beatle decade....."
Happy New Year everyone, its nice to see you all again! Last year was a great one for us here at Culpa Direct, and also for music blogs in general. Its good to be here, and I'm looking forward to another wonderful year.
For my first post of 2007, I chose something that you really don't see every day. Its a rather odd LP from 1971, on the Pickwick label, of Beatles and solo-Beatles covers, and its one of the few Beatle oddities that I did NOT see posted anywhere on the internet in the past year.
The official title of the LP is "Tribe Sing The Creative Genius Of George Harrison, John Lennon, & Paul McCartney", but a more accurate title would have included Yoko Ono among the "creative geniuses", as one of the tracks is a cover of Yoko's "Why" from her 1970 "Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band" LP. I can't be sure, but this just might be the very first instance of a "major" release of a Yoko cover.
So anyway, as it says in the liner notes, "Here, then, are the best examples of the Beatle decade, rocked by the Tribe in brilliant new stereo arrangements".
1 LET IT BE
2 SOMETHING
3 WHY
4 MY SWEET LORD
5 ISN'T IT A PITY
