Double Honey, part 8

"Just gimme that raw fish!"

Here are a few more fun JOHN and YOKO vocal booth recordings from the summer of 1980.

First up is "Ordering Dinner". I have to say, between vegetarian MCCARTNEY, LENNON's Japanese fish, and RINGO with his suitcase full of baked beans, I think I'd rather eat dinner with The Rolling Stones!

Next we have a short snippet, "Sean Visits The Studio", where, uh, Sean visits the studio.

And then there's Yoko recording her "Walking On Thin Ice", featuring an intrusion by John. I had previously posted this great track back on Yoko's birthday.

Berlin

For years now I've been saying that LOU REED should do a live performance of his classic 1973 concept album "Berlin", and now my wish has come true! Its just been announced that Lou will be performing "Berlin" at a four night stint at St. Anne's Warehouse in New York in December. I'm hoping for a DVD!

From the press release:
"A theatrically realized concert version of Reed’s stylized rock paean to life outside the circle, the orchestrations filled with the lyrics of the broken hearted and willfully disabled...the drifting tormented addicts of love formalizing their own downfalls in the outskirts of the divided city."

"Berlin" was originally conceived and recorded as a double-LP, but RCA informed producer BOB EZRIN at the last minute that they would not accept a double, and poor Bob had to hurry up and chop about fourteen minutes of music out of it to make it fit on a single LP. No songs were dropped, just some serious editing. (Lou would get his revenge soon enough, when he got them to release "Metal Machine Music" as a double LP). Surprisingly, and disappointingly, "Berlin" was not restored for the recently remastered CD.

As far as I know, there are no bootlegs of the removed material, but about 58 seconds of it showed up on the original 8-track release. You can download the clip from 8-TRACK HEAVEN here:

Magazine of the Week #35

The November 1981 issue of HIT PARADER obviously went to press before the start of THE ROLLING STONES' 1981 tour, which kicked off in September.

The four-page cover story, "The Rolling Stones: Confessions Of A Fanatic - The Coast-to-Coast Adventures of a Rock & Roll Junkie" by CHARLEY CRESPO tells us that "at press time, a Stones tour has been booked for the late Summer, but delays in the making of the new album, Tattoo You, threaten to postpone the tour".

In "Record Reviews", ROY TRAKIN reviews YOKO ONO's "Season Of Glass" and GEORGE HARRISON's "Somewhere In England". Of the Yoko LP, he says "its grim, unpleasant, and filled with the stench of death. I can't stop listening to it". As for George, he writes that "All Those Years Ago" with its "pitifully desperate attempt to recapture the Beatle flavor is a depressing reminder of how low the "spiritual one" has sunk in his thirst for a hit". Ouch!

Also in the magazine are articles on JOE WALSH, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, and DAVE DAVIES, plus two pages on "Beatlemania: The Movie".

And, as always with "Hit Parader", words to all the latest hit songs, including "We Can Work It Out" (as recorded by CHAKA KHAN), and THE WHO's "Don't Let Go The Coat".

Double Honey, part 7

"I'm gonna sing a little, so I hope I don't disturb you..."

Here are some more of those 1980 vocal booth recordings, this time from a Yoko song, "Every Man Has A Woman". The song would appear first, with Yoko's vocals, on "Double Fantasy", then with John's vocals on the "Every Man Has A Woman" Yoko tribute LP, and most recently (in 2004) as a dance remix CD called "Every Man...Every Woman...".

Plenty of fun here with both Yoko and John, and on the first track Yoko even has Sean in the booth with her.

25 Years Ago Today

On August 26, 1981 MICK JAGGER held a press conference at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia to announce the forthcoming ROLLING STONES tour, which would commence in that very stadium with shows on September 25th and September 26th.

Here are four exclusive, never before seen photos taken prior to the press conference while legendary promoter BILL GRAHAM and rock journalist extraordinaire LISA ROBINSON hung out in the stadium parking lot scoping the place out and chatting with a few fans.

And here are a few taken by photographer SCOTT WEINER later in the day, scanned from a magazine:

Back at The Hit Factory, on August 13, 1980, the basic tracks were recorded for "Cleanup Time". From the "Master Control Running Tape" vocal booth recordings, here's a run-through with some discussion:

Ladies and Gentlemen...

"Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones", the 1974 film of The Stones' 1972 tour has never been officially released for home video, but fortunately there are currently excellent bootleg copies available. This is one of the best, if not the best, concert film ever. Seriously. This is The Stones in their prime, when they really were The Greatest Rock'n Roll Band In The World. The energy, raw power, and sense of purpose on display here are awesome. Why this is still not commercially available is beyond me.

I found these links on a message board a few days ago, and have since seen the same links on two other blogs, so I don't know where they originally came from. The eight files for the main movie open as a single 700MB avi file, and it looks and sounds great. The bonus material is the '72 tour rehearsals, and there are links for the artwork also. The password for all files is "purgatory". Many many thanks to the original uploader!

Magazine of the Week #34

This week's magazine is the October 1981 issue of RELIX, the mag that brings us "Music For The Mind".

The three-page cover story, "THE ROLLING STONES: The Wait Is Over" by STEPHANIE FINNEGAN, gives a brief history of The Stones, and hypes the '81 tour. Then there's a "Rolling Stones Celebrity Corner" page, with photos of various Stones with various celebs, including OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN with MICK, JIM CARROLL with KEITH, and KINKY FRIEDMAN "advising the Stones".

There's three pages on PETER TOSH - "De Bush Doctor Speaks", featuring an interview where Peter's words are transcribed to reflect his accent. Peter is asked "What kind of sensation was it to open up for The Rolling Stones?". His reply: "Oh mon, can you imagine? Can you imagine?! Dere was no nervousness because I do not boder wit dat. Nervousness was eliminated out of me after dying a tousand times, for after dying a tousand times dere is no fear left. But going on stage wit Mick Jagger and playing before an audience dat never even heard reggae music. I mean going before a hundred and twenty tousand people dat never even knew dat dere is a music dat exists called reggae. Can you imagine!? Dat means dat if de music did not have de potential, I would not be here before you today. For if de potential was not dere, I would have been mobbed by dose people."

In the "Vital Vinyl" record reviews, Finnegan reviews "Tatoo You", and tells us "the tunes on Tatoo You are collectively bland, but they are bound to become familiar and tolerable through extended airplay".

Lots of other good stuff in this issue, including Reggae Sunsplash 1981, THE TUBES, ROBERT HUNTER, "Remembering Janis", reviews of THE GO-GOS, LITTLE FEAT, and THE PRETENDERS, and a "GRATEFUL DEAD Song Title Centerfold", a two-page comic art spread depicting "100 GREATEFUL DEAD SONGS".

There seems to be no end to the great music blogs these days - we must be in some sort of Golden Age here.

Anyway, here's one from Brazil called "Blog Stoned". Their latest post is the ROLLING STONES show from Amsterdam on July 31, 2006, and they also have a few more Stones boots up, as well as lots of other stuff. Check it out:

Michael Putland

Legendary photographer MICHAEL PUTLAND recently had a show, called "Rocks Off", at the Yoshiko Matsumoto Gallery in Amsterdam. It ran from July 22 through August 6.

A promotional card for the show featured a photo on one side, and some details on the back:

"Michael Putland has been the Rolling Stones tour photographer during various tours in the seventies and eighties. We are proud to show a wide variety of his most exciting pictures, for the first time ever in The Netherlands! Each purchaser of a photo can win a free copy of the book "Pleased To Meet You" in a prize draw. (courtesy Genesis/PTMY)"

Here's what it says about the photo on the front: (front image: Michael Putland, "Its Only Rock 'n' Roll" gelatin silver print, 1973. Image size 16"x20"). It says 1973, but wasn't this from 1974, for the "Its Only Rock 'n Roll" video shoot? Anyway, its a great photo. Check out Keith with his little portable cassette recorder (which appears to be recording!), and Charlie's got something stuffed in between his hi-hat cymbals, presumably so he could play along with the pre-recorded backing track while filming without making too much noise.

Double Honey, part 4

On August 18 and 19, 1980, JOHN LENNON had a film crew come in to the Hit Factory for a video shoot, and producer JACK DOUGLAS once again had his "Master Control Running Tape" going. This is not really for the casual listener - its mostly Lennon's vocal, with the band way in the background, and lots of clowning around. I think its a fascinating look at Lennon having a good time in the studio. For details, see CHIP MADINGER and MARK EASTER's great book "Eight Arms To Hold You", available here.

Here's a ROLLING STONES song that doesn't get covered too often, "Something Happened To Me Yesterday".

This is from an absolutely charming 2005 CD from Argentina called "Babies Go Rolling Stones":

Double Honey, part 3

Yoko: "You sound like a Beatle."

John: "An EX-Beatle, you (bleep)-ing (bleep)!"

August 8th, 1980 - in addition to "Starting Over", JOHN LENNON and the boys also recorded the basic tracks for what would be the second single from the "Double Fantasy" LP, "Woman". I'm certainly no expert on these sessions, so I'm not quite sure if some of this stuff actually comes from a later overdub session, but here ya go - more fun from the vocal booth recordings:

Ulf TV

Some of you youngsters may not remember, but there really was a time when it wasn't quite so easy to find so much cool, easily-downloadable bootleg stuff on the internet. No bit-torrents, no blogspot.com, just the newsgroups (which I still haven't figured out!), and a few here-today-gone-tomorrow sites that we'd have to scour the 'net to find. But even back then, there was "Ulf's List". Every week (more or less), starting in the late '90s, Ulf would post some great ROLLING STONES bootleg audio, and he's still going strong today.

Anyway, this week Ulf has posted some Stones audio from TV appearances - from the Super Bowl, the American Music Awards, MTV Music Awards, and some live MARIANNE FAITHFULL.

Here's his page, scroll down for the downloads, and you can click on "Hard facts on the albums" for the details:

Magazine of the Week #33

Yes, its another "poster magazine"!

HIT MAG, Volume 1, Number 8, sometime in 1984, with a 22-inch x 32-inch poster of the cover illustration.

The mag gives us two pages of "What Mick And Michael Have In Common": For starters, "Both are entertainer entertainers". Also, "They have the same initials", and "They are both picky about films". And betcha didn't know that "They love beautiful women". "Both are the lead singers in their groups", and, of course, "Both are constantly misunderstood".

Also in this issue, two pages of ADAM ANT, two pages of STYLE COUNCIL, and a full-page TINA TURNER photo.

Double Honey, part 1

In the summer of 1980 JOHN LENNON went into New York's Hit Factory to record tracks for what would become the "Double Fantasy" and "Milk and Honey" LPs. Fortunately, producer JACK DOUGLAS had his "Master Control Running Tape", which recorded the sessions from Lennon's vocal booth, so there is quite a bit of audio available from these sessions, and like most Lennon session tapes, these are a lot of fun to listen to....

On August 8, they recorded the basic tracks for the next single, "(Just Like) Starting Over":

Postcards From Elton

Someone sent this to me today - its an advance preview of the lead-off track from the forthcoming ELTON JOHN CD "The Captain and The Kid". Due to hit stores in September, its a sequel to his 1975 classic "Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy" LP.

So here's "Postcards To Richard Nixon", featuring some very nice piano playing from ol' Reg. And ya gotta like a song that mentions Steve McQueen!

A few things...

Here are a few things I picked up around the blogs recently.

The first one is from the "Fab Forgeries" series, now available at DOWN IN THE GROOVE. Its "I Saw Her Standing There", combining the live ELTON JOHN and JOHN LENNON version from 1974 with a live PAUL MCCARTNEY version. Sounds great, it really rocks. And of course John (and Elton) sings "how could I dance..." while Paul sings "she wouldn't dance...", just like when THE BEATLES did it live!

I SAW HER STANDING THERE - ELTON JOHN WITH LENNON AND MCCARTNEY

Next up is the STARS ON 45 "Beatles Medley" from 1981. This is a good one to download, if only just to confirm that its still as annoying today as it was back then.

STARS ON 45 BEATLES MEDLEY

And finally, we have an ex-Beatle covering THE ROLLING STONES. Its THE PETE BEST COMBO with their mid-sixties cover of "Off The Hook". Pretty good!

Imagine Bush

Okay, here's one especially for those of you who didn't think the MICHELLE MALKIN video I linked to a couple of weeks ago was funny.

Its a video featuring GEORGE BUSH singing JOHN LENNON's "Imagine". Its pretty clever - they've edited audio and video of Bush speeches so that he's speaking the lyrics to "Imagine", amid scenes of war, carnage, Lennon, Donald Rumsfeld, etc. I don't know who made it, just that it says "Shown on FILECABI.NET".

Here it is to download as a wmv:

Magazine of the Week #32

Is it a poster? Is it a magazine? Its ROCK SUPERSTARS POSTER MAGAZINE!

There's no issue date or number, (just a 1975 copyright), but according to the "8-6" marking on the cover, it arrived at my local store thirty-one years ago today, August 6, 1975.

The magazine opens up into a 36-inch by 22-and-a-half inch poster of a shot similar to the one on the cover. The magazine part consists of six pages containing two articles, "Through The Past, Starkly...", and "Rock'n Roll Goes On The Road Again", with photos from the 1975 tour, plus the cover, and a back cover ad for Pioneer Stereos.

Hindu Love Gods

Another wonderful out-of-print CD is the 1990 self-titled release from HINDU LOVE GODS.

Its WARREN ZEVON on vocals and guitar, with R.E.M.'s PETER BUCK, MIKE MILLS, and BILL BERRY, doing ten covers from folks like ROBERT JOHNSON, WILLIE DIXON, WOODY GUTHRIE, and PRINCE. Just a bunch of guys having a good time playing some music they enjoy - how did this ever get released in the first place?

My personal favorites here are the Prince classic "Raspberry Beret", and "Battleship Chains", the TERRY ANDERSON song made famous by GEORGIA SATELLITES.

Magazine of the Week #31

Not much in the way of photos in our magazine this week, but its still a lot of fun. The August 1985 issue of SONG HITS features the cover story "MICK JAGGER: He's The Boss" by RICH SUTTON.

Sutton gives us the basic short history of THE STONES and tells us a bit about Mick's first solo LP "She's The Boss": "Jagger at his teasing, snarling, cocksure, belligerent best. Nearly in a league with "Some Girls", its another shot in the arm for rock and roll". We're also reassured that "Mick's convinced that he's got a few more years on the road left", although "as for WATTS and WYMAN, their homelives could conceivably put a lid on another Stones' tour".

Also in this issue are articles on "USA FOR AFRICA" ("United Support of Artists for Africa") and the whole "We Are The World" thing, LRB ("the new moniker for Australia's LITTLE RIVER BAND"), GEORGE DUKE, and JOHN SCHNEIDER.

Album reviews include ERIC CLAPTON's "Behind The Sun" and EMMYLOU HARRIS' "The Ballad of Sally Rose" (one of my favorites - will we ever see an American CD release of this one?).

And of course, lots and lots of song lyrics, including "Say You're Wrong" by JULIAN LENNON, Clapton's "Forever Man", LOS LOBOS' "Will The Wolf Survive", BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN's "I'm On Fire", Emmylou Harris' "White Line", and John Schneider's "Its A Short Walk From Heaven To Hell" (huh???).

Here's a beautiful promotional item. Its a 7-piece hanging mobile, presumably from 1969, as it appears to be promoting "Through The Past, Darkly", and "Let It Bleed" is not pictured. The outer square measures 18" x 18".
