'80s Dance Party, part 7

In 1985, MICK JAGGER released his first solo album, "She's The Boss", and the two singles from it were both given the 12-inch dance mix treatment.

First up was "Just Another Night". The 12-inch included an "Extended Remix", an "Edit", and a "Dub Mix". Here's the Extended Remix and the Dub Mix:

Magazine of the Week #26

For the 26th installment of "Magazine of the Week" (has it really been 26 weeks already?), we have a magazine called SUPER ROCK SPECTACULAR - its Volume 1 - #3, dated "Fall 1978".

From cover-to-cover, its 68 pages of nothing but ROLLING STONES. No ads or anything, just page after page of Stones. Except for the color covers, its all black-and-white, and some of the photos aren't very well reproduced (the cover says "Jammed with hundreds of stolen photos"). But hey, its still 68 pages of nothin' but Stones!

After an introductory editorial, there are seventeen separate articles on various aspects of the Stones. Here are just some of the story titles:

"Brian Jones: The Spirit Behind The Stones", "Say Goodnight Keith", "The Death of Brian Jones", "Hell's Angels and Murder at Altamont", "Marianne Faithful - The Love That Failed", "Drugs- How Mick Was Busted".

"Aftermath - The Movie Success That Follows" takes a look at Mick's films "Performance" and "Ned Kelly", and mentions Jean-Luc Goddard's "Symphony For The Devil". Yes, "Symphony".

Fun stuff!!!

'80s Dance Party, part 6

LOU REED surprised everyone in 1984 when "I Love You, Suzanne" from his "New Sensations" LP became a minor hit. Hoping for another, RCA soon gave another track from the LP, "My Red Joystick", the 12-inch dance mix treatment.

Side A was the "Remixed Version". Side B featured the "Instrumental Version", and also included the LP version of "I Love You, Suzanne".

'80s Dance Party, part 5

So it looks like one of the rumors reported in "Magazine of the Week #25" was true.....

Here's the JACKSONS' "State of Shock" from 1984, with lead vocals by MICHAEL JACKSON and MICK JAGGER, produced by Michael Jackson.

These tracks are from the 12-inch vinyl - one side was the "Dance Mix" and the other side was the "Instrumental".

'80s Dance Party, part 4

And its THE ROLLING STONES again, this time from 1984, with the "Too Much Blood" 12-inch. It contained three different mixes of the song - an 8-minute Dub Version, the album version, and the infamous 12-and-a-half minute Dance Version.

The Dub and Dance versions have not been released on CD, so here they are:

Magazine of the Week #25

Yes, its yet another issue of CREEM, this time the February 1984 issue. Its got an interview with MICK JAGGER by GARY GRAFF, where he discusses the "Undercover" LP and some thoughts on turning forty.

ROBERT CHRISTGAU's "Christgau Consumer Guide" gives BOB DYLAN's "Infidels" a "B-" and X's "More Fun In The New World" an "A-".

In "Rock 'n Roll News" we learn that DAVID BOWIE will be directing IGGY POP and SUSAN SARANDON in "Repo Man", that MICK JAGGER and MICHAEL JACKSON may have a duet on the next JACKSONS album, and that DAVE DAVIES has "stormed out" of THE KINKS.

Stories on X, EURYTHMICS, and MOTLEY CRUE. Album reviews include "Undercover", "Infidels", and MCCARTNEY's "Pipes Of Peace". And the "Creem Dreem" is CLARE GROGAN of ALTERED IMAGES!

'80s Dance Party, part 2

Its hard to believe its been 25 years since the release of BILL WYMAN's international hit single "(Si Si) Je Suis Un Rock Star" (which tanked in the USA). A great track with some delightful lyrics. "They'll think I'm your Dad / and you're my daughter"??? Yeah, Bill, we know all about it.....

There was a US promo 12-inch that featured a version that ran 3:22 on one side, and a "Special Edited Version" that ran 7:24 on the other side, neither of which have been released on CD (the version on the official CD release, "The Bill Wyman Compendium", runs 5:59).

So put on your dancing shoes and set The Wayback Machine for 1981:

'80s Dance Party, part 1

"Summer's here and the time is right for dancing in the blogs".

Welcome to the Culpa Direct '80s Dance Party. I'll be posting some of those old '80s 12-inch vinyl dance mixes. Long-time readers may remember my "12-inch Heaven" series from a while back where I was posting some dub mixes. I'm trying to be thorough, so a couple of those tracks may be repeated in the Dance Party.

First up is the Rolling Stones' "Dance (Instrumental)". This was side two of a 1981 promo - side one was "If I Was A Dancer (Dance Pt. 2)", from the "Sucking In The Seventies" LP. This instrumental version has not been released on CD.

Keith and Bianca in "Godless"

I just finished reading ANN COULTER's new book, "Godless". Here are a couple of brief excerpts that may be of interest to ROLLING STONES fans. But please note that I'm presenting these excerpts completely out of context - if you want to know what Ann's talking about, you'll have to buy the book (which you can do by clicking here).

Pages 117-118:
And the Democrats' leading geopolitical strategist, Bianca Jagger, said, "Ambassador Joseph Wilson" said "his report got to the State Department, to the White House, to the national security and that he believes that all of them should have that information, and that Vice President Cheney should have had that information".

Page 256:
They are like geeks playing air guitar in front of the mirror pretending to be Keith Richards. Except there really is a Keith Richards. (In fact, some scientists argue that Keith Richards is actually the missing link.)

Stones Talk '83

Here are a couple of ROLLING STONES interview tracks, from a 1983 promotional 7-inch 33-and-1/3 vinyl record. Its a white label with a big Hot Licks, and a small LP-style hole. No label name, but its got a 1983 Musidor copyright. I don't have any other info on this, but it looks to me to be "official", and not a bootleg. If anyone can help with details, I'd appreciate it.

Each side is about 6 minutes long - one side features the Stones "interviewing" each other, and the other side has 5 interview snippets, one from each of the Stones.

THE ROLLING STONES - SIDE A

THE ROLLING STONES - SIDE B

UPDATE 6/22/06: Thanks to "nick" for pointing out that the record is from the 1983 fan club "20th Anniversary Collector's Kit". More on that in the future. Stay tuned.

Birthday overflow

Yesterday's MCCARTNEY birthday is reason enough to post another batch of these great old Apple singles. These are all produced by Paul McCartney.

From 1968, the B-side of "Thingumybob" (Apple 1800):

YELLOW SUBMARINE - BLACK DYKE MILLS BAND

Also from 1968, the B-side of the huge hit single "Those Were The Days" (Apple 1801):

TURN TURN TURN - MARY HOPKIN

The rest are from 1969. This was the flip side of "Goodbye" (Apple 1806):

SPARROW - MARY HOPKIN

On this one, McCartney produces Jackie Lomax doing a Leiber/Stoller song (Apple 1807):

THUMBIN' A RIDE - JACKIE LOMAX

And finally, McCartney producing Mary Hopkin again, with the B-side of "Que Sera Sera" (Apple 1823):

FIELDS OF ST. ETIENNE - MARY HOPKIN

Happy Birthday Paul, part 2

So today's the big day - when he's 64. I guess there's not much to say about Beatle Paul that hasn't already been said, so I'll just present a few of my personal favorite tracks and get out of the way.

First up, from 1967, there's the first (instrumental) take of "Hello Goodbye", or "Hello Hello" as it was still called at the time. Check out RINGO's drumming on this one - he's amazing!

HELLO GOODBYE TAKE 1

Then there's Paul's 1969 acoustic demo for MARY HOPKIN of his song "Goodbye" (Mary's version is available in yesterday's post):

GOODBYE (DEMO)

Here's a mighty silly version of "Two Of Us" from the 1969 "Get Back/Let It Be" sessions. It starts out normal enough, but then John and Paul start singing with funny voices:

TWO OF US

I can never remember exactly what "PS Love Me Do" was from, but its a lot of fun:

PS LOVE ME DO

And what McCartney tribute would be complete without McCartney's JOHN LENNON tribute? Here's Paul's live-in-Liverpool medley of Lennon/McCartney songs:

STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER / HELP / GIVE PEACE A CHANCE

And here are a couple of interesting links to wrap things up.

I don't know how they found it all, but DOWN IN THE GROOVE has posted sixty-four different versions of "When I'm 64":

DOWN IN THE GROOVE - WHEN I'M SIXTY-FOUR

And here's a link to Beatlegs Podcast #19, "Wings Year One", 20-some minutes of very cool early Wings audio:

Happy Birthday Paul, part 1

Tomorrow will be PAUL MCCARTNEY's 64th birthday, but we're going to start celebrating today.

To start things off, here are some of the early Apple Records singles featuring McCartney songs. These were all released as A-sides, except Doris Troy's "Get Back", which was the B-side of her "Jacob's Ladder" single. "Thingumybob" was the first non-Beatles Apple single, with catalog number 1800.

THINGUMYBOB - BLACK DYKE MILLS BAND (1968)

GOODBYE - MARY HOPKIN (1969)

GOLDEN SLUMBERS / CARRY THAT WEIGHT - TRASH (1969)

COME AND GET IT - BADFINGER (1969)

GET BACK - DORIS TROY (1970)

No Expectations

Someone sent this to me, and said that they just recently downloaded it but didn't know where they downloaded it from (yeah, yeah, I know how it is). So while I'm sorry that I can't link to, or even give credit to, the original uploader, I am certainly glad to be able to present this track.

Its a great version of "No Expectations" by BECK and BETH ORTON, from February 17, 2000:

Thanks to the sender and whoever originally uploaded it! Good stuff!

Magazine of the Week #24

It may not have the greatest cover photo, but the June 12, 1979 issue of CIRCUS WEEKLY is overall one of the most fun single issues that we've looked at so far.

It starts out with an article called "How Love Came To Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt, Meat Loaf, Clapton and Stills", where we learn all about how the stars fell in love. Meat and Leslie, Rod and Alana, Jerry (Brown!!!) and Linda, Stephen and Susan, and of course Eric and Patti. Ah, true love...

Then in the "Hardware" column, we get the scoop on "The metal-coated tape breakthrough". Then there's a full-page of "Doonesbury" - probably a reprint of a Sunday strip. We get a concert guide, a "Rock On Radio" guide, and a "Rock On TV" guide.
A story about "reality therapy", where lifers at Rahway State Prison help provide juvenile rehab (at some point that program was featured in a TV special, "Scared Straight"). Three pages on "The Bird", pitcher Mark Fidrych, who's attempting a comeback with the Detroit Tigers. Then a page on the "new Badfinger", and the return of Ian Hunter.

Then there's six pages (mostly photos) on Woody and The New Barbarians, including a review of the May 7th show at Madison Square Garden. A few pages on Marilu Henner, Elvis Costello for Peavey amps, Paul Stanley for Ibanez. Disco, Ted Wass, a "guitar accessory report".

There's a report on the big "no-nukes" rally in Washington, with Jane Fonda, Jackson Browne, etc. Reviews include Jay Ferguson and Albert Lee LPs. And a half-page color "Wizard of Id" strip. Thoroughly enjoyable, all for only a buck-twenty-five.

Mash-ups, part 6

This will probably be the last of the mash-ups for a while. Actually, these tracks might be more accurately described as re-mixes, or even sound collages, rather than mash-ups. They're from a few years back, and they're still a lot of fun to hear. I'm sorry but I don't remember where I got them, and I don't have any other info on them.

Mash-ups, part 5

Continuing with THE BEATLES' mash-ups, here are two which both use vocals from "Baby You're A Rich Man". The first one is "Rich Girls and Boys" by GO HOME PRODUCTIONS, but I don't know what the music is from - sorry. The second is "Baby You're A Pure Man" by BRAT PRODUCTIONS, which uses music from ALL SAINTS.

Billy Preston

BILLY PRESTON passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2006 from kidney failure. He had been in a coma since November.

I had the privilege of seeing him perform live once, in 1975, with THE ROLLING STONES. I saw ERIC CLAPTON a couple of years ago when Billy was touring with him, but the show I saw was one of the shows that he missed, being hospitalized.

So anyway, here are a bunch of songs to celebrate his life, and mark his passing. First there are his four A-sides for Apple Records - "That's The Way God Planned It" and "Everything's Alright" from 1969, and "All That I've Got" and "My Sweet Lord" from 1970. Then there's a few live tracks with The Stones - "That's Life" from Detroit, July 28, 1975, and "Nothing From Nothing" and "Outta Space" from Knebworth, August 21, 1976. Rest in peace, Billy.

THAT'S THE WAY GOD PLANNED IT
EVERYTHING'S ALRIGHT
ALL THAT I'VE GOT
MY SWEET LORD
THAT'S LIFE 7/28/75

June 6, 1968

On June 6, 1968, the BBC's KENNY EVERETT came to EMI Studios to interview THE BEATLES for "The Kenny Everett Show" on BBC Radio 1. The Beatles had just recently begun recording what would become "The White Album", and had been working on Ringo's "Don't Pass Me By".

This 14-minute "interview" contains a lot of clowning around, some silly singing (including John doing "Cottonfields"), and general nonsense. Its nice to hear the boys having fun. Most, but not all, of this recording was broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on June 9, 1968.

Beatles Movie Medley

Back in 1982 Capitol Records released the "Beatles Movie Medley" as a single to help promote the "Reel Music" compilation LP.

The four-minute medley contains excerpts from the original versions of "Magical Mystery Tour", "All You Need Is Love", "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", "I Should Have Known Better", "A Hard Day's Night", "Ticket To Ride", and "Get Back", all run together in the style of the then-popular "Stars On 45".

The single actually made it to #12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Apparently its the only "official" Beatles single never released on CD.

Mash-ups, part 4

Got some good reaction from the GUNS 'N ROSES link last week, so here's a GNR/BEATLES mash-up. Its "Sgt. Pepper's Paradise" by JIMMI JAMMES, mashing "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" with "Paradise City". Pretty cool:
