Tell him that his lonesome nights are over

Just a couple of tunes for a rainy Friday night.

Here's Emmylou Harris with a shout out to good ol' Mr. Sandman...

Meanwhile, here's one for that other guy:

Time Passes and Life Manouevers

I think John Lennon said it best: "Well Well Well".

Its funny how so many of the things we come to depend on, or think we've come to depend on, can be so easily left behind.  And not necessarily intentionally, just one day you look around and say "hey, didn't I used to....?...."

I think with the hour-to-hour demands of the day-to-day grind we're eager to take any opportunity to escape, even if just for a few minutes here and there. When these hourly demands are drastically reduced, so is the virtually constant desire for escapism.  I know that a lot of people have been having a hard time these days, but I'm thankful to be able to say that even with the current challenges I've been having a ball.  "Missing it for the world", indeed.

Still, it does look like things are starting to ease up a bit, even here, and there've been many lessons learned as we've seen masks go on and masks come off.  So as we take the first steps toward wrapping up another catastrophe we try to imagine what the next move could possibly be. I'm going to guess it'll be an alien invasion, but we'll lick that too. Anyway, have fun but stay safe and watch your feet, and I hope to see ya soon.

The Moon and Pig

Culpa's Dipsy Doodle Diary 4/20/20:

Last night's Swords of Cerebus Vol. 1 was so much fun I've decided to keep right on going.
Vol.2 features issues 5 through 8 which were originally published in 1978 and 1979, and   includes the first appearance of Jaka and the return of Elrod.

For tonight's musical accompaniment, it's Who Are You, originally released in August 1978, just a few weeks before Keith Moon's death.  It was very popular at the time although generally recognized as inferior to what Who had come before. The original CD release sounds great, however the later reissue CD (the one with bonus tracks) is virtually useless in Culpaland.

Clovis' beads!

Culpa's Dipsy Doodle Diary 4/19/20:

Sitting back on a Sunday evening, enjoying some classic music and comic books. Tonight it's the Stones' Love You Live and Dave Sim's Swords of Cerebus Vol. 1.  They're from the same era and seem to go together pretty well. Love You Live was originally released in September '77, and Swords includes the first four first issues of Cerebus, from '77 and '78.

Shake it down, shake it down. And mind your manners, son, I've got a tall pointy hat!

Great version of Star Star.  So I guess the question is, if I start rereading Cerebus now, can I finish all 300 issues before I'm able to walk into Wawa without a mask on?

Is it about the bunny?

So it's almost Easter again, and I can't help but wonder.....is it about the bunny?

Here's the late great Sally Starr's classic non-LP single "Rocky the Rockin' Rabbit".

And here's Our Gal with a different rabbit, Goldie the Bunny.

And of course, here's Deputy Hawk:

Experience Twin Peaks

Here's something you don't see too often. From my personal collection, the sign is from the bookstore stand-up display for The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer from 1990. The book in the picture is the hardcover (with dust-jacket), but the display was for the soft-cover.  It was a 3-piece display, all cardboard. There was a generic floor-stand that held a boxy piece which displayed a couple rows of front-facing copies of the book, and the sign attached to the top. The stand and the box are long gone, but I've still got the sign.

A quiet vibration land

Culpa's Dipsy-Doodle Diary 4/9/20:

"A vague haze of delirium creeps up on me".  So now this virus is starting to affect my routine. They warned me a few weeks ago, so I got a card, and sure enough I had to use an ATM for the first time the other day. I did manage to figure it out, but did you know there's a limit??!!  I mean, wtf 'm I 'posed to do with three hundred dollars??!!  Then its off to the supermarket, where I don't realize they have the aisle floors all marked with one-way decals until I'm on my way to check-out. No wonder people were giving me stranger-than-usual looks.

On the amazing journey, together we'll ride.

The mystery begins

It's hard to believe its been 30 years, but there ya go. I was ready for it, watched the original broadcast while taping it on VHS. 2-hour speed of course.  Twin Peaks, where "health and industry go hand-in-hand".

"Come on cowboy, light your fire..."

The Bridge of Death

Culpa's Dipsy Doodle Diary 4/2/20:

"...answer me these questions three, 'ere the other side he see."

If the answer is "yes" to any of the following questions, access to the facility will be denied.

1. Have you returned from the Bedrock area in the past 14 days?

2. Have you had close contact with or cared for someone diagnosed with Dipsy-doodle-itis in the past 14 days?

3. Have you experienced any Dipsy-doodle-itis-like symptoms in the past 14 days?

April Fool's Month

Culpa's Dipsy Doodle Diary 4/1/20:

So it's April Fool's Day, now the official start of April Fool's Month. Brings to mind John Entwistle singing "everybody takes me for a fool, it's so uncool".  Been spending a lot of time indoors lately; as I consider the impending day that the comics page catches up with current events, I can't help but notice how badly these windows need to be cleaned.

Here's Entwistle's "I Found Out" from his classic 1972 Whistle Rymes LP.  "I'll find out tomorrow, I've been led up the path again..."

Blue Masks

Culpa's Dipsy Doodle Diary 3/31/20:

Went to Sam's Club to pick up a few things today. Kinda weird, half the people in the place were wearing masks. Anyway, they still didn't have toilet paper, but at least I was able to snag 273 Family-Size packages of Q-Tips. I had planned to keep shopping but some of the other customers were giving me strange looks. I thought I'd better just get on out of there as soon as possible, you can't trust people who are wearing masks.  Anyway, we won't be growing our own potatoes but we should be able to hear any approaching marauders. And of course music always sounds better with cleaner ears.

Enjoy the title track from Lou Reed's 1982 LP "The Blue Mask":

"Spit upon his face and scream
There is no Oedipus today
This is no play you're thinking you are in
What will you say
Take the blue mask down from my face
And look me in the eye
I get a thrill from punishment
I've always been that way"

Shanghai Surprise

I was knocked on my back on a dock at Yang Tse. It's a hell of a way to see China.

Dipsy Doodle Itis

Somebody got Dipsy Doodle Itis and the whole world is headed to Frantic City. My pizza delivery guy said "man I hope this virus never ends!" I'm no dodo, but what can I possibly say that hasn't already been said or link what hasn't already been linked? Thanks for stopping by, and here's to social distance. Let the sun shine in, face it with a grin, and stay away from the fish tank cleaner..

Steve Weber RIP

Steve Weber passed away on February 7 at the age of 76.

Best known for his work with Pete Stampfel in the Holy Modal Rounders, Steve and Pete also played with the Fugs on their first album, where Steve's classic "Boobs A Lot" first appeared, in 1965.

It was later re-recorded with the Holy Modal Rounders, and released on their 1971 LP "Good Taste Is Timeless" and as a single.

The song would be frequently played on the syndicated Dr. Demento radio show, and became more popular than ever with its inclusion on the 1975 "Dr. Demento's Delights" LP.

Cruising Into The Night

Released on September 12, 1989, Julee Cruise's debut album "Floating Into The Night" is a David Lynch project that serves as an intro/companion to the original run of the Twin Peaks TV series which would premiere several months later on April 8, 1990. Produced by Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti, with lyrics by Lynch and music by Badalamenti, the album includes five songs that would feature in the series.

An instrumental version of the opening track "Falling" would become the Twin Peaks theme. The other tracks used in the series are "The Nightingale", "Into The Night", "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart", and "The World Spins".

Here's Julee performing "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart". Both clips are said to be from 1989, but the Twin Peaks pilot is mentioned in the intro to the second clip

"JULEE CRUISE: Floating Into The Night (Warner Bros.) This new age chantoozy is no mushmelon; her sentimental schlock and quasiclassical quietude are at the forefront of the latest hip convolutions. And when admirers claims she sounds best in a dark room at three in the morning, I wonder whether she puts them to sleep too. B MINUS"
